Istanbul is a city that eats together.
Children at the table, bread passed by hand, small plates shared without ceremony.
Our favorite places are not only about food, but about how they make us feel welcome, unhurried, familiar, and at home.

Just down the road in Çukurcuma, Tomtom Kebap feels like a living room with a grill. Cozy, unpretentious, and open all day, it is the kind of family eatery where everyone is known by name. Baron sometimes works there, waiting tables after school hours. Order the chicken skewer simple, tender, and perfect for sharing.
In Pera, Kevok Ocakbaşı is where we go for deeply rooted flavors and generous meze plates, prepared in the Diyarbakır tradition. The kebaps are soulful and the mezes impossibly fresh, a place where a long lunch turns into an afternoon. If you must choose one dish, let it be the yağlı kara lamb, rich and comforting.

Across the water in Yeldeğirmeni, the rising creative quarter on the Asian side, Borden offers a lighter rhythm. A modern fish and vegetable kitchen with a warm, neighborhood feel, it is ideal for daytime meals with children. Their seabass taco is playful and bright, a small surprise on a familiar table.
Our evenings often end at Tavern Bar & Snacks, our local place for beautiful cocktails and thoughtful contemporary Turkish dishes. Though refined, it remains welcoming and relaxed. The kitchen is open from Tuesday to Saturday, with pop-ups appearing through the week like little celebrations. The bonfile şaşlık is always worth waiting for.

For döner, there is only one address in our family: Dönerci Engin Usta. Run by Engin Usta and her daughter, it serves what Venus calls the best döner in Istanbul, wrapped in the softest pita with scallions, and paired with a bright basil lemonade that children love as much as adults.
When we want many tastes at once, we go to Soho House Allis, where an open buffet of Turkish vegetable dishes fills the garden with color and conversation. It is an easy place to eat slowly, choosing what you like, returning for what you loved.

And for a true Istanbul ritual, there is Pandeli Restaurant. Hidden above the Spice Market and reached by a narrow historic staircase, it feels like stepping into another time. Surrounded by İznik tiles, you are served dishes that belong to memory itself. Order the Hünkar Beğendi, soft, smoky, and deeply comforting.

Petra Roastery is where our days often begin, a coffee roastery, café, bakery, and general store under one roof. It is where Baron Venus feels most at home. Baron’s favorite is the steak sandwich, while Venus never strays from the chicken schnitzel, and together they dream of the house-made sumac lemonade. You can drink your coffee, buy your bread, and take home pantry goods prepared by the Petra kitchen alongside local artisanal brands; a ritual in itself.
These are not only places to eat.
They are places to gather.
Where children learn flavors.
Where tables become stories.
Where Istanbul shows itself at its most generous.
